MATERIAL TO COVER PUBLICATION FRONT COVERS

I found it difficult to find material sources that seemed to be of high quality, it can be hard to judge things online.

There were wide ranges of colours in different fabrics, I think it is important that each publication has an individual colour cover. Therefore, I found the choice of colours helpful.

I became interested in the faux suede material and leatherette. The materials are all durable and applying to multiple surfaces and are therefore appropriate for my publications.

MATERIALS RESEARCH

PAPER FOR THE PUBLICATION PAGES

My experience at Shepherds London paper shop was a strong contrast from the vague and uncertain online shopping I completed for my other fabric.

It proved to be extremely helpful to be able to interact with the paper before purchase, therefore being able to compare it to my content.

The quantity of paper on offer was vast and diverse; initially it was difficult to choose from so many options, however by keeping my options simple (as intended) I was able to narrow the search.

The paper I chose was of a high quality; the embossed paper I bought was very subtly detailed and allows a degree of sophistication.

The thickness and strength of the tracing paper I selected should make it fairly durable and hard-wearing. This is important as my publications will get handled by different people during assessment and therefore must withstand potential harm.

SCREW POSTS FOR BINDING

Screw posts are easy to use and will work well with a publication that's layout is often adapting, I therefore believe they will be an appropriate tool for me to use in my books.

The aesthetic of screw posts is fairly contemporary and, despite being very visible, could potentially enhance the aesthetic of the publications by making them seem more authentic.

Selecting the colours was challenging as the posts will be very visible on  the front of the book. I selected silver as I thought that gold could end up looking slightly gaudy, whilst silver will remain fairly neutral and could compliment the paper and material being used.

I completed both online and physical research for the screw posts, I am pleased I was able to interact with them before purchasing as it gave me a better idea for sizing and width.
