OTTO NEURATH

"The methods of visual education started out of these resources and his exhibitions became internationally renowned and commissioned. The application of simple colors and figures along with the use of lino-cutting and printing methods were best for the production of graphic symbols; but they were all alien to Vienna's recent artistic movements." - STANFORD ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PHILOSOPHY

"Neurath was a social scientist, scientific philosopher and maverick leader of the Vienna Circle who championed ‘the scientific attitude’ and the Unity of Science movement. He denied any value to philosophy over and above the pursuit of work on science, within science and for science. And science was not logically fixed, securely founded on experience nor was it the purveyor of any System of knowledge. "- STANFORD ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PHILOSOPHY

MY ANALYSIS

THERE IS A STRONG ELEMENT OF SIMPLIFIED COMMUNICATION IN NEURATH'S WORK: IGNORING THE AESTHETIC INTEREST A VIEW WILL HAVE IN THE WORK, NEURATH'S DIAGRAMS, GRAPHS AND MAPS ARE ALL ABLE TO PORTRAY MESSAGES USING PRIMARILY VISUAL METHODS.

A VERY VISUAL WAY OF DISPLAYING INFORMATION WITHOUT MUCH TEXT AT ALL.

NEURATH'S WORK RELATES TO MY PROJECT OF SILENT COMMUNICATION DUE TO HIS VERY LIMITED, ALMOST NONEXISTENT USE OF TEXT.

A STRONG USE OF COLOUR TO DIFFERENTIATE ITEMS AND SECTORS OF AN IMAGE. WHEN PRESENTING INFORMATION, THE VIEWER NEEDS TO BE ABLE TO EASILY DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN VARYING GENRES: NEURATH USES COLOUR EFFECTIVELY TO DO THIS.

A VERY FORMAL LAYOUT TO NEAURATH'S WORK CREATES A SENSE OF PROFESSIONALISM AND INTELLIGENCE TO THE INFORMATION.

THE USE OF REPETITION FAMILIARISES THE VIEWER WITH THE IMAGERY AND SUBJECT MATERIAL.

IT COULD BE VERY EFFECTIVE TO APPLY THE IDEA OF ISOTYPES TO MY PROJECT AND PERHAPS RESEARCH THEM FURTHER.
